Genius POS Success: Twice the restaurants, now with less support calls.

How this fresh-fast Mexican franchise grew from four locations to nine with Pineapple Bytes on its team supporting their Genius POS deployment.

Fresh food in more places Made Possible with Genius POS

Every taco on this menu starts the same way: fresh, locally sourced ingredients, cooked in-store, every day. That promise built a loyal following and a franchise network that kept growing.

With four restaurants open and more on the way, the owners faced the question every growing group eventually hits. The system that ran four locations had done its job. Could the way they ran technology keep up with nine?

Growth was multiplying the busywork With a Technology Bottleneck

This is Atlantic Canada’s fastest-growing fresh-fast Mexican franchise. Each new location added more than another storefront. It added more of everything else:

  • A big first cheque. Each new franchise needed roughly $11,000 in POS equipment before it sold a single taco.

  • Menu changes that had to wait. Updating a price or modifier meant clicking through several screens, then refreshing the system to apply it. Managing pricing, menus, and modifiers across multiple locations had become increasingly cumbersome. Making changes required navigating multiple screens, and updates were not immediate. System refreshes were needed to apply changes, making it difficult to roll them out during active service. Not something you do during the lunch rush.

  • Reports by email. Every location manually built its own reports and sent them to head office, adding administrative work and making it more difficult to maintain consistent visibility across the business. More locations meant more files and more chasing.

  • A counter full of tablets. Uber Eats, Skip and DoorDash each had their own device. Staff were managing multiple ordering platforms across separate devices, creating more work during busy periods. At peak, staff were bouncing between screens instead of food.

  • Service calls adding up. Meanwhile, hardware maintenance costs, frequent service calls, and the upfront investment required to open new franchise locations added to the challenge. Hardware upkeep and support requests only grew with every location.

The goal was simple to say and hard to do: open more restaurants without multiplying the work at head office or the cost for each new franchisee. Our team The business needed a technology platform that could support its growth while making operations simpler for both corporate staff and franchisees.

A team that already knew the menu

Pineapple Bytes had supported this group's restaurants for years. We knew the menu, the modifiers, how orders moved from counter to kitchen, and where the friction was. So the move to Genius didn't start from a template. It started from how these restaurants actually run.

The plan: one location Connected at a time to a Cloud-Based POS

Switching POS in a busy kitchen is risky business. The plan was built so no restaurant had to close its doors to make the change:

  1. Build the menu first. We programmed Genius from the existing menu, so staff saw familiar items on day one.

  2. Run both systems side by side. Genius came online alongside the old system before each switchover. No downtime from the migration.

  3. Switch one restaurant at a time. A phased rollout over about four months, with hardware shipped and each location guided through installation.

  4. Keep every gift card working. We worked with the previous provider's team to bring existing gift card balances across, so guests kept redeeming them as if nothing had changed.

  5. Train the crew. Staff learned the new system before they had to run a rush on it.

Pineapple Bytes worked with the restaurant group to transition from its legacy POS environment to Genius POS, focusing on the practical needs of a growing franchise operation. With Genius, the group gained centralized menu management, allowing pricing, menus, and modifiers to be managed across locations and supported platforms. Changes can now be pushed out instantly without interrupting service.

Reporting was another key area of improvement. Working with head office, Pineapple Bytes configured automated daily, monthly, and yearly reports to deliver the information the business needed directly from each location. Reports can still be generated manually whenever additional information is required, but routine reporting no longer depends on staff preparing and sending files themselves.

To simplify online ordering, Uber Eats, Skip, and DoorDash were consolidated into a single iPad workflow. Incoming delivery orders are organized in one place, separate from in-store orders, helping staff manage orders without continually switching between devices.

The move also introduced a more accessible hardware model for new franchisees. Depending on the installation requirements, tablet-based setups can significantly reduce the initial cost of entry compared with more hardware-intensive configurations.

Together, these changes gave the business a more connected way to manage its locations and support its continued expansion.

The Result was Twice the Restaurant Locations, Half the Headaches

The impact of switching to Genius was felt in a massive way at all levels for this fresh-fast operator as they grew.

For the owners and head office:

  • More restaurants, same support load. The group went from four locations to nine, and total monthly support calls stayed about level. That's more than 50% fewer calls per location.

  • One menu, pushed everywhere. Prices, menus and modifiers update across every location and supported delivery app instantly, even mid-service.

  • Reports that arrive on their own. Daily, monthly and yearly reports land at head office automatically. Managers can still pull anything else on demand.

For each new franchisee:

  • A much smaller first cheque. Tablet-based setups brought estimated upfront POS costs from about $11,000 per location to about $2,000, depending on the configuration, cutting startup costs by over 80%.

For the crew on the line:

  • Three delivery apps, one tablet. Uber Eats, Skip and DoorDash orders come into one place, kept separate from in-store orders.

  • Sold out? Gone in a tap. When an item runs out, staff pull it from supported ordering platforms quickly, so nobody orders something the kitchen can't make.

How to Scale Your Restaurant without the Growing Pains

Genius with Pineapple Bytes, deployed at this level, tends to fit operators who:

  • Run quick-service or fast-casual locations and plan to open more.

  • Franchise, and want consistent menus and reporting across every location.

  • Do serious delivery volume and are tired of juggling tablets.

  • Run one great location today and want a setup that's ready for the second.

Running a busy full-service dining room? Genius includes tableside payments and reservations too, but we'd rather walk your floor before we promise a fit. If it isn't right for you, we'll tell you.

Genius is the software. Pineapple Bytes is the partner, bringing an expert team that sets it up around your restaurant and stays with you after go-live: menus built from what you already sell, switchovers planned around your service, data and gift cards carried across, and a crew trained before the rush. Pineapple Bytes helped a growing quick-service restaurant group transition from a legacy POS environment to Genius POS, simplifying multi-location management, reducing administrative work, and establishing a more scalable foundation for continued growth.
